Dissertation note: Undergraduate Theses (ABELS) - English Language Studies Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges, 2025 Abstract: This study explored the interplay of Halliday's five metafunctions in The Spark, the official student publication of Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC), by analyzing five selected magazine covers from 2019 (Volume 39, Issue Number 3) to 2023 (Volume 43, Issue Number 3), using a qualitative descriptive analysis to identify how ideational, interpersonal, textual, contextual, and interest metafunctions are conveyed through visual elements. It aimed to examine the visual elements that convey meaning and influence viewer interpretation. Furthermore, the application of the five metafunctions of Systemic Functional Linguistics was examined to understand how the visual elements in these metafunctions influence the meaning-making, engagement of the audience, and readers' focus. The findings resulted in these elements being intentional designs to reflect the real-world themes (ideational), connect the emotion of the audience to the subject (interpersonal), organize the details and information well (textual), reflect the culture and values of CSPC and societal issues (contextual), and capture the interests of the audience (interest). Therefore, this showed that it was effective in strengthening the engagement of the audience as well as influencing their perception. Visual elements are not for aesthetic design but a representation of the message, advocacy, and informing the audience, especially in the use of advocative materials like student publications.
