520 3 _aRoad design is a complex art that combines efficiency with safety and science with practicality. This study sought to investigate the present condition of the service road in Paloyon Proper, Nabua, Camarines Sur, underpinning the various geotechnical engineering properties of the subbase soil in order to develop a pavement and drainage design. This research includes site investigation, engineering survey, geotechnical investigation, design development and analysis, and cost estimate. The road is currently a gravel road with 5.5 meters width with a drainage system in place. In conformance with the AASHTO and ASTM standards and procedures, six soil samples were collected and each sample was subjected to the same tests for sieve analysis, plastic and liquid limit tests, and California Bearing Ration (CBR). The geotechnical properties of the soil revealed that the particle size distribution is evenly closed with a high fine gravel content, slightly plastic and with a high CBR value classified as A-2-4(0). Further, based on the geotechnical investigation, the road is adequate as subbase soil, and identified as Item 201. The design for the service road is a two-lane road with a length of 600 meters and 5- meter width with a pavement thickness of 200 cm. It also includes 0.5-meter width of drainage system and a slope protection on both sides of the road. The estimated cost of the developed design of service road is about PHP 14,057,047.06. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into potential transportation networks that will eventually promote trade and commerce, leading to an increase in economic activity of the Nabua community.
