| 520 | 3 | _aA water filtration system is essential for ensuring safe drinking water, particularly in communities that rely on untreated sources. Testing the quality of a spring source in Tapayas, Balatan, Camarines Sur indicated that, although physical and chemical parameters were within acceptable limits, microbiological contamination existed, posing a serious health risk. Water from this source is meant for consumption in Sitio Indang, Tapayas, and San Francisco, Balatan. This study suggested a filtration system that utilizes gravel, sand, and activated carbon as filters for sediments and ultraviolet (UV) treatment as microbial disinfection. A system prototype was developed and tested. The prototype performance, however, failed to meet the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW). The results highlight the necessity of substantial improvement in the UV filtration process. Regardless of the failure in the prototype, the study affirms the potential of combining traditional filtration with UV treatment as a cost-effective approach. The future recommendations involve increasing UV exposure, improving system design, and using substitute materials that are readily available in rural communities to maintain sustainable water safety. | |
