"The book emphasizes the importance of always being aware of one's purpose for communication and one's audience. It provides discussion topics of local and international importance always in the context of a specific purpose and a specific audience, not in the abstract. It uses different classroom arrangements, e.g., teacher facing the class and discussing with the whole class, students doing pair work and group work, role-playing, simulations, and viewing online materials. It uses different modalities, written texts, audio-recordings, and videos. It goes with a teacher's manual accessed online which includes teaching tips, answer keys, and rubrics for marking written and oral outputs. The textbook has perforated pages for students to submit to their teachers. And each unit makes use of all the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, critical thinking, and viewing. Each unit is independent of the other units, but there is a recommended sequence especially for three units which are introductory in nature.
"The World Englishes framework is expansive-it builds on the idea that English is the property not only of its native speakers but also of everyone who uses it.... Thus, the book emphasizes the multilingual contexts of using English in Asia and beyond, and looks at the Filipino as a global citizen, as a citizen of the world. For this reason, the book features readings and audio-recordings from speakers of different varieties of English, from the Inner Circle (speakers of English as a Native Language, e.g., Americans, Australians), Outer Circle (speakers of English as a Second Language, e.g., Filipinos, Indians), and Expanding Circle (speakers of English as a Foreign Language, e.g., Japanese, Koreans).
“Experts tell us and experience has shown us that no textbook is ever complete and no text book is ever perfect. But if we find a good textbook, as this one is, then we are halfway to getting the job of effective teaching and learning done." -- Back cover
