Summary: Learning to read is a very wonderful process. It opens the door of knowledge and learning opportunities as well. But it is not that simple, in fact, it is complicated for it needs a number of cognitive processes such as recognizing letters and words to interpret the message which coincide with the knowledge of the world. With this reality, it is understandable that some children fail to understand what they are reading. Perhaps, the most logical reason why children fail to understand what they are reading boils down from unable to decode and recognize the words in the text. But in cases like a reader can decode the words but fail to understand the text is alarming. In other words, it is necessary that the words on the page will be taken together to make sense and convey an information. It is basically linking reading to meaning in which most of our students lack, so explicit teaching on reading comprehension skills and strategies is necessary for these learners.
