This study examines the intricate web of rhetorical move structures found in research abstracts published in English Studies journals by using John Swales' established framework of three fundamental moves. This study aims to uncover the deliberate use of these moves to improve communicative efficacy and maintain academic rigor by meticulously analyzing a corpus of abstracts from various English Studies publications. The study meticulously examines the manifestation of each move, namely, establishing the research territory, carving out a niche, and occupying the said niche. This study found out that among the five journals categories, "System" (SYS) in applied linguistics ranks highest, demonstrating a strong commitment to communicative and structured abstract writing and "English for Specific Purposes," on the other hand, use these rhetorical devices the least, with the latter being the least organized. These findings not only shed light on common rhetorical strategies used by authors but also provide important insights into disciplinary norms and scholarly communication practices in the field of English studies. Furthermore, by examining the rhetorical move structures in research abstracts, this study hopes to improve our understanding of how English Studies scholars navigate the complex terrain of academic communication. This study sheds light on the disciplinary conventions and implicit norms that govern scholarly discourse in English Studies. Finally, this study serves as a catalyst for improving scholarly writing practices by encouraging greater precision, coherence, and impact in the dissemination of research in the field of English Studies, thereby advancing collective knowledge and discourse within the academic community.
