The inspiration for authoring this guidebook developed as a result of numerous shared experiences. We, Katie Alaniz and Kristie Cerling, first met as colleagues at Houston Christian University, in Houston, Texas. Through our time spent investing in the lives of students, we quickly realized our joint passion for providing learners with meaningful, memorable educational experiences. We believe in the power of beginning with the end in mind (Covey, 1989; Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) and starting with WHY (Sinek, 2011) when designing learning opportunities for students, whether in EC-12 or higher education settings. Both of us have witnessed greater student engagement, motivation, and success as a result of purposeful learning endeavors-learning endeavors that align with everyday life and directly correlate with students' current and future personal and professional pursuits. We believe that as educators, we owe this to our students; they simply spend too many waking hours in school contexts for their time not to be spent wisely. The following guidebook represents the culmination of proven frameworks for purposeful living and learning (Covey, 1989; Wiggins & McTighe, 2005; Sinek, 2011), incorporating key principles from past guidebooks that address the intentional pursuit of impactful authentic assessment endeavors (Wilson, Alaniz, & Sikora, 2016; Alaniz, 2021). As learners who have benefitted from the tremendous power of authentic assessment in action (as well as endured a number of less purposeful assessment measures), as educators who have taught in a variety of settings spanning from first grade through doctoral programs, and as individuals who believe that learning experiences, we care deeply about empowering others to embrace authentic assessment endeavors. We have discovered that as we devote less time and energy on achieving academic "to-do's" and instead reflect more intentionally upon "why we do what we do," educational experiences bring greater fulfillment and joy. Teaching and learning should be meaningful, exciting, and joyful. Educators can easily feel like cruise ship activity directors when they lose sight of the end in mind. Because of this, authentic learning endeavors play an important role in purposeful and joy-filled teaching; we hope and pray this will be true of our readers as well. In the words of King Solomon, widely renowned as the wisest man who ever lived, "Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to.. enjoy their work under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 5:18, New Living Translation). Afterall, life is too short to do anything other than this! all students deserve meaningful learning experiences, we care deeply about empowering others to embrace authentic assessment endeavors.
