N2 - "Construction management or construction project management (CPM) is the overall planning, coordination, and control of a project from beginning to completion. CPM is aimed at meeting a client's requirement in order to produce a functionally and financially viable project. Value Management (VM) and Value Engineering (VE) are techniques concerned with defining, maximising and achieving 'value for money' (VfM). These are systematic team-based collaborative approaches, initially pioneered in the United States during the Second World War to secure maximum output from limited resources. At the initial stages of a project, value management provides an exceptionally powerful tool to explore a project's objectives and aspirations from the client's perspective. The limited objective of project control deserves emphasis. Project control procedures are primarily intended to identify deviations from the project plan rather than to suggest possible areas for cost savings. This characteristic reflects the advanced stage at which project control becomes important. The time at which major cost savings can be achieved is during planning and design for the project. During the actual construction, changes are likely to delay the project and lead to inordinate cost increases. As a result, the focus of project control is on fulfilling the original design plans or indicating deviations from these plans, rather than on searching for significant improvements and cost savings. It is only when a rescue operation is required that major changes will normally occur in the construction plan. The information available in the book will also prove valuable for academics/instructors to provide construction management/project management students with in-depth knowledge and guidelines followed in the construction projects and familiarize them with construction management practices"-- Back cover ER -
