<subfield code="a">"Pregnant adolescents have unique needs that require additional support and teaching during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Although their physical care is similar to adult women, adolescents often have fewer life experiences, making it harder for them to cope with the changes that come with pregnancy and birth. Therefore, it is crucial for healthcare providers to provide nonjudgmental and developmentally appropriate care. Biologically, adolescents' bodies are still developing and may not be fully prepared to take on the added strain of pregnancy. This could lead to health complications, such as cephalo-pelvic disproportion and nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, young girls may not be mentally prepared for mother-hood, which could lead to mental health problems such as depression. Socio-culturally, pregnancy outside of marriage carries a social stigma that can worsen the situation for unmarried adolescents. They may not receive the emotional support they need, and they may face barriers to accessing adequate nutrition, rest, and antenatal care. However, even married adolescents may not be aware of the importance of antenatal care. Furthermore, adolescent
women are more likely to deliver at home, often under the care of a traditional birth attendant. This is because older women in the home may view this as a cheaper and more accessible option. However, this can be dangerous if complications arise, and it is important for healthcare providers to educate adolescents and their families about the importance of trained birth
attendants or hospital care in case of complications. This book "Nurse Digest Complications of Adolescent Birth and Postpartum Period" is divided into seven chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of adolescent pregnancy and birth.
The book provides a comprehensive guide to the challenges and complications of adolescent birth and postpartum period, with practical information and strategies for healthcare professionals working with adolescent mothers"-- Back cover.</subfield>
