Relevant information on water flow rates from nearby streams were gathered and examined to guide the detailed design process of the device. Using this data, a water wheel design was developed to efficiently convert low-flow kinetic energy of flowing water into electrical power, specifically designed to minimize energy loss. However, the commercially available generator incorporated into the system was unsuitable for low-flow conditions and did not meet the expected values. The generator was unable to reach its minimum efficient operating RPM under low-flow conditions, resulting in an output that did not meet the expected values, despite generating 12V and 1 µA output with the help of a boost converter for increasing and stabilizing the output voltage. The study highlights the need for generators designed for low-flow and low-RPM use, and future research should focus on designing unique turbines for very low-head applications to develop more durable and expandable portable hydropower solutions.1 aBayrante, Ma.
