This study explores the potential of using the kinetic energy of flowing water in streams with minimal to no hydraulic head for generating portable power. Relevant information on water flow rates from nearby streams were gathered and examined to guide the detailed design process of the device. Using this data, a water wheel design was developed to efficiently convert low-flow kinetic energy of flowing water into electrical power, specifically designed to minimize energy loss. However, the commercially available generator incorporated into the system was unsuitable for low-flow conditions and did not meet the expected values. The generator was unable to reach its minimum efficient operating RPM under low-flow conditions, resulting in an output that did not meet the expected values, despite generating 12V and 1 µA output with the help of a boost converter for increasing and stabilizing the output voltage. The study highlights the need for generators designed for low-flow and low-RPM use, and future research should focus on designing unique turbines for very low-head applications to develop more durable and expandable portable hydropower solutions.
