The Machine-Readable Cataloging 21 Format is the tool used by the students for their
learning and skills application using a computer and specific library management systems. MARC
21 encodes the various descriptive elements of bibliographic data into specified fields, each with
numerical indicators that the program recognizes and creates a bibliographic record. This study
aimed to determine students' awareness of the MARC 21. The researchers used quantitative
research using descriptive design in gathering data. Self-awareness Theory and the Technology
Acceptance Model were used in this study, which focuses on strategies for resolving the difficulties
in specific fields and influencing their acceptance of new technologies. The respondents of the
study were all 4th year students, equivalent to 40 students from the BLIS Program. Based on
the study findings, the majority of the respondents were female, which shows that feminization had
an impact on the librarianship profession, specifically in terms of management and negotiating
skills. Moreover, in the level of awareness, respondents showed sufficient knowledge in MARC
21, which resulted in a verbal interpretation of ‘moderately aware.’ However, the study showed
that the respondents encountered various challenges, such as the embedded controlled values in
using MARC 21. As a result, the researchers developed a project focusing on the enhancement of
the skills and knowledge of students in MARC 21 and made a brochure as a supplementary guide
for students in understanding MARC 21 and as a basis for other libraries and instructors for their
future intervention activities on cataloging and MARC 21.
