N2  - Reading and writing are distinct from the language processes of speaking and listening largely by virtue of the fact that a visual modality is involved. Hence, one would expect that the visual processes in reading would be the subject of a great deal of theory and research. Surprisingly, however although there has been a considerable amount of relevant research, it is widely scattered both geographically and in terms of disciplines, and until very recently there have been no substantial  reviews or books concerned with visual aspects of normal reading or of reading disabilities
