"Sociolinguistics is like studying how society influences the way we use language. It looks at how our culture, what we expect from others, and the situations we find ourselves in can change how we talk. It's a bit like noticing how we might use different words with our friends than we do with our teachers or bosses, because of the unwritten rules of how we're supposed to act in different parts of our lives. This area of study also looks at how language can affect society back. It digs into every way language and society touch each other.
Sociolinguistics doesn't just stop at looking at different ways of speaking. It also looks at how we use language to do things like making promises or apologizing, and how these ways can be different in different cultures. Another big part is understanding how people use language to show who they are and what they believe in, which can tell us a lot about how society works. This field isn't just about studying language for the sake of knowledge. It's also about using what we learn to help with teaching languages, making policies about how languages are used, and even helping in legal cases. It's a way of taking a closer look at the everyday thing of talking and seeing all the complex ways it's connected to the world we live in.
This book takes you on a journey from the basics of how language and society interact, through the ways our identities shape and are shaped by language, to how all of this knowledge can be applied in the real world, especially in education and research"-- Back cover.
