Dissertation note: Undergraduate Theses (BSN) - Nursing. Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges, 2025. Abstract: Selecting a college program is one of the most crucial choices in a student's educational path. For numerous students, the decision to enroll in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing often is not their first preference, but rather a fallback when their desired courses are inaccessible or viewed as impractical. The pressing question is-does opting for nursing as a secondary program influence a student's academic performance? The study is conducted to assess the effect of second choice academic discipline in the performance of level II-III student nurses of Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges school year 2023-2024. In this study, a descriptive method was used to determine the profile of the respondents, the effects of second choice academic discipline and the associated factors wherein a checklist questionnaire was utilized in gathering necessary data for the study and there are 202 total number respondents. The majority of the respondents were 21-year-old females that are mostly in their 3rd year. Around 60% came from families earning 10,000 and below monthly. This financial instability affects the academic performance due to competing and study demands. There was a slight decline due to academic workload and clinical demands that impacted their academic performance. Findings revealed that student engagement and student exploration was both significantly influenced by family monthly income and first- semester General Weighted Average (GWA). Student exploration was significantly linked to family monthly income and first-semester GWA. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors significantly influenced all academic outcomes. According to these results, a supportive learning environment is essential for students to develop clinical skills and critical thinking. Further research is needed to understand the factors driving motivation and empowerment in nursing students. Instructors should create a nurturing academic culture, mentorship, career guidance, and opportunities for research, specializations, and community work.
