Summary: "Depending on the functions that they are performing at the time, human resource managers can be your best friend or your worst enemy. They are the people that notify you that you have been employed or that you have been terminated. It is a department that is sometimes tinged with a sense of detachment from the day-to-day lives of people. Often, it implements decisions that are made by the executive and management teams without having the public relations to justify those decisions. It is a procedural department that is mired in rules and regulations. For the organization, any failure in the work of the human resources department may lead to significant legal consequences such as fines. Yet, no organization can survive without the support of human resource managers. For example, the recruitment process would be chaotic and arbitrary if it was not moderated by the clinical objectivity of the human resources management department. Through the work of this department, organizations can hire and retain the best that the market has to offer. They ensure that personnel decisions are fair and consistent with the existing laws of the nation. For example, when faced with militant unionism, the human resource departments will calm the temperature with their endless rules and regulations. For the employee, the human resources department might be the only one to turn to when they are facing harassment and discrimination. This is particularly true when such abuse is being meted out by someone that is in a position of power, such as a supervisor, manager, or executive. This department is responsible for organizing and moderating the disciplinary procedures for every employee in the department. They are the go-to option when people are facing problems like work-related stress or are requesting significant time off work to deal with personal problems. Through meticulous consistency and professionalism, the human resources department can protect the organization from predatory employees that may be looking to exploit legal loopholes to extract unmerited compensation from the organization for the flimsiest of reasons. These are some of the factors that justify an exploration of the roles and responsibilities of human resource management in an organization. All this analysis is rooted in the policy framework that organizations will enact to ensure that they can survive and thrive in their environment Although human resource management is often perceived to be a uniquely internalized process; there are aspects of the work of the department which touch on the external environment. Indeed, a proactive human resource management team will seek new information and education about the external environment so that it is not caught off-guard by competitors and regulators. It is from all these perspectives that this book is written. The book is aimed at those who are generally interested in working people and their experiences in the workplace. However, the book is useful for undergraduates in a range of management courses. In writing this book, the author tries to locate human resource management within the framework of organizational efficiency while at the same time opening up the department for further scrutiny and appreciation based on its response to the external business environment"-- Back cover.
