The study determined the parental knowledge and attitudes on timely childhood immunization among parents in Polangui, Albay. It sought to answer the following objectives: to determine the respondents age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment, occupation, family monthly income, number of children and religion; to assess their level of knowledge on timely childhood immunization in terms of benefits, risk and recommended schedule; to evaluate the parental attitudes along with level of trust, side effects and importance of immunization; to identify the extrinsic and intrinsic barriers encountered by parents in ensuring timely childhood immunization; test the significant relationship between profile of the respondents and the barriers; test the significant difference between knowledge and attitude of parents in overcoming barriers; and to propose a plan to enhance the parental knowledge and attitudes in improving childhood immunization rate in Polangui, Albay.
Most respondents are 27-30 years old, majority are female, married, high school graduate, unemployed, with family monthly income of less than Php13,873, had 1-3 children and Roman Catholic. Parents are very knowledgeable in terms of benefits, risks and recommended schedule of immunization. Parents exhibit positive attitude regarding timely childhood immunization and strongly agree in terms level of trust, side effects and importance of timely childhood immunization. Parents sometimes encounter intrinsic and extrinsic barriers in ensuring timely childhood immunization. Respondents' sex, has a significant relationship to the barriers while age, civil status, educational attainment, occupation, family monthly income, number of children and religion do not affect the barriers. The knowledge in terms of benefits affects the attitudes on level of trust and importance of childhood immunization. The knowledge of parents on the risk and the recommended schedule of immunization influenced their attitude towards immunization. The proposed plan developed will enhance the parental knowledge and attitudes in improving timely childhood immunization in Polangui, Albay.
