Includes bibliographical references.
Geriatric care is one practice setting in which student nurses are trained to provide evidence-based, high-quality care to the elderly. Living with geriatric clients provides nursing students with firsthand experience that is relevant to their geriatric care education. The study identified and investigated the challenges that Bachelor of Science in Nursing students face when caring for geriatric clients.
The descriptive correlational method was utilized and a questionnaire was distributed to 110 Bachelor of Science in Nursing students who care for elderly clients. Purposive sampling is a method employed by researchers to select respondents.
The data were analyzed with the use of the percentage technique, weighted mean, and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. The results revealed that the majority of the respondents are 19-21 years old, female, and all are single. Most are first-year BSN students who are providing care for geriatric clients aged 60-70 years old with hypertension. The majority of the respondents are grandchildren of geriatric clients. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing students are highly motivated in caring for geriatric clients because of their love and affection and willingness to provide care.
Furthermore, the study found that the nursing students' year level, relationship with the geriatric client, and the geriatric client's health condition showed a significant relationship with the intrinsic challenges encountered. On the other hand, the relationship between the geriatric client's health conditions shows a substantial connection with the extrinsic challenges encountered. The proposed plan is expected to assist Bachelor of Science in Nursing students from Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges in dealing effectively with the challenges that come with caring for geriatric clients.
