The rural community of Zone 6, Lourdes Young Nabua, Camarines Sur, is dependent on farming and other income-generating resources outside of the community. To address this, researchers conducted a study to propose a new design of footbridge that could resolve the problems present in the existing structure. The study also seeks to determine the present condition of the existing footbridge in terms of dimensions, elevation, physical defects, maximum flood level, safety, and maintenance, as well as the total cost needed for its construction.
The existing footbridge's span measures 56.4 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width; the ramp has a deck width of 1.8 meters and measures 3.3 meters long on one end and 1.9 meters long on the other. The rectangular column is 1.52 meters tall and measures 0.24 meters by 0.45 meters. Its elevation is 1.52 meters above the natural ground level. The structure also has defects, such as 19.23% of cracks, 17% of exposed rebars, and 13.04% of spalling. The maximum flood level encountered is 0.62 meters above the natural ground level.
The new elevated bridge design has a total span of 62.2 meters and a width of 2 meters, divided into 14 spans with a 5 mm space for thermal expansion supported by a 400 mm by 400 mm column. It is elevated up to 2.15 meters and has an additional handrail with a total height of 1 meter to ensure safety. Its estimated total cost is 1,382.964.96 pesos.
The results demonstrate that the elevated footbridge's proposed design would ensure a more reliable and safe transportation system that will completely meet the demands of the rural population. However, to further verify the integrity of the design, the researchers advise carrying out a structural study for a single-supported beam.
