Modern imaging technologies have had a profound effect on the study of yield estimation and plant disease detection. Multispectral images have great potential to assess plant growth and represent a significant technological advance in the search for fast and non-destructive analysis techniques. The researchers developed a multispectral imaging acquisition system that can determine plant health. The device utilized a multispectral camera to process images, generate both manual and automatic NoIR and NDVI data, and create orthomosaics. The NoIR images are those captured with infrared light, and the acquired image will be processed to obtain NDVI. The NDVI is a numerical indicator that uses the electromagnetic spectrum's visible and near-infrared bands to assess plant health. This requires capturing aerial images to acquire a large area of farmland and forests. The researchers utilized the concept of the Kite Aerial Photography (KAP), which is cost-effective, as an alternative to drone technology. Field testing resulted to photos taken from a high vantage point allowing familiar landscapes to be captured from a unique viewpoint while still being easily recognized. Developing this device is intended to improve crop inspection and precision agriculture for farmers and foresters, reducing the cost and operation of mapping and monitoring medium- to large-sized areas. The project was realized by introducing this technology, enabling to map an area at a low cost.
