"Social work has its roots in the struggle of society to deal with poverty and the resultant problems. Therefore, social work is intricately linked with the idea of charity work; but must be understood in broader terms. The concept of charity goes back to ancient times, and the practice of providing for the poor has roots in all major world religions. Social workers, especially those trained for generic work, have not been satisfied with psychodynamic psychology, and have vigorously drawn attention to its limitations. The psychology of the working classes differ too greatly in respect of their particular trades, provinces, and surroundings, to be exposed in detail. It demand, moreover, a very long and laborious study, to which great faculties of observation would be necessary, and for these reasons probably it has never been attempted. The book is of tremendous significance for the people related to the field, researchers, students and teachers as well." -- Back cover |
