Summary, etc. This research examined the use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as a sustainable alternative to natural coarse aggregates (NCA) in concrete manufacturing. The study sought to evaluate and contrast the physical and mechanical characteristics of both RCA and NCA, along with their impacts on the performance of both fresh and hardened concrete. The study, adhering to criteria set by the American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and AASHTO, utilized an experimental research design featuring combinations of 100% NCA, 50% NCA-50% RCA, and 100% RCA, targeting design strengths of 20.7 MPa and 27.6 MPa.

The tests conducted focused on gradation, moisture content, specific gravity and absorption, unit weight, abrasion loss, slump, air content, compressive strength, and flexural strength.

The findings indicate that RCA has greater moisture absorption, reduced specific gravity, and a lighter unit weight compared to NCA, attributable to its porous structure, while also exhibiting commendable abrasion resistance. The results for new concrete demonstrated that the inclusion of RCA marginally diminished workability and density while preserving acceptable quality. In hardened concrete, both compressive and flexural strengths improved with extended curing time, with 100% NCA attaining the greatest values, followed by 100% RCA and the blended mix. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that aggregate type and curing duration significantly influenced both compressive and flexural strength results.

The research suggests that recycled concrete aggregates can effectively substitute natural aggregates partially in both structural and non-structural concrete applications, especially where sustainability and material conservation are prioritized. It recommends the pre-soaking of RCA before mixing, the utilization of water-reducing admixtures to enhance uniformity, and the implementation of legislative frameworks that encourage the incorporation of RCA in local construction practices. Future research should evaluate long-term durability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental consequences to improve the incorporation of RCA into sustainable infrastructure development.
