520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. "Media is largely a cultural product, and the transfer of such a product is likely to have an influence on the recipient's culture. The media plays a very important role in ensuring that societal norms, ideologies, and customs are disseminated. Socialization has been made possible and much simpler because of the media. Through socialization, different societies are able to share languages, traditions, customs, roles, and values. Globalization describes an ongoing process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a globe-spanning network of communication and trade. The term is sometimes used to refer specifically to economic globalization: the integration of national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration, and the spread of technology. Media have become a central force in our global society, affecting every aspect of life and culture. Media is acritical tool in functioning in contemporary society. Media Culture and Society understand the new centrality of media and cultural forms to the experience of social. Much globalized media content comes from the West, particularly from the United States. Driven by advertising, U.S. culture and media have a strong consumerist bent (meaning that the ever-increasing consumption of goods is encouraged as an economic virtue), thereby possibly causing foreign cultures to increasingly develop consumerist ideals. Accessibly written, this book will be of interest to undergraduates and above in sociology, media studies, cultural and communication studies, and anyone interested in globalization." -- Back cover
